Volunteer Opportunity: Treasurer of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland

Candidates for Treasurer of the Society sought

President's Medal

The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland is looking for candidates to replace the current Treasurer, Dr Stephen Carter, when he steps down after serving the maximum allowable term on 30 November 2020. This is an opportunity to help lead a major independent charitable heritage organisation in Scotland with a global membership. With national projects in the sector (Dig It! and ScARF) as well as active publishing and the beginning of a new accommodation project this is an exciting time to join an ambitious and focused Board of Trustees (called Council). We need a person who combines a fundamental interest in the development and future success of the Society with a broad-based understanding of how the finances of an organisation like the Society can help the delivery of its objectives; they must also be able to explain all of this to others – critically to the other Trustees and the Fellows.

The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland promotes, demonstrates and upholds equality of opportunity for all applicants, and we encourage applications from across Scotland and beyond.

Applicants will not need to have previous experience of serving on Council, although a knowledge of the Scottish heritage sector in its widest sense, Society governance and the Society Strategic Plan 2016-21 would be beneficial.

Applicants are asked to consider the Treasurer role information available as a Word doc here: treasurer-role-information

We provide induction, support, and ongoing learning and development opportunities for all Board members. All applicants will submit a completed application form (society-trustee-application-form) and a shortlist will be interviewed by the Treasurer Selection Advisory Group, chaired by the Vice Presidents of the Society, in advance of their name being put on a ballot list issued by Council. Society Laws stipulate that members of Council must be Fellows of the Society (Law 9).

It is anticipated that the new Treasurer will take up post on 30 November 2020, having been elected at the Anniversary Meeting, and may stand for election as Treasurer each year as per Law 13.

If you would like further details, you are asked to contact Dr Simon Gilmour, Director of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in the first instance:
email: director@socantscot.org or telephone: 07799691981.

Applications are now open, and forms can be accessed here: society-trustee-application-form

Treasurer role information available as a PDF here: treasurer-role-information

The deadline for applications is 12 midnight Sunday 27 September 2020.

Interviews will be held in early October via videoconference. Paperwork for the ballot must be approved by Council on Monday 19 October 2020. Elections will be held on 30 November 2020.
