19th January 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

University of St Andrews Libraries and Museums, msBR65.A9

Joint with the Scottish History Society

This will be a hybrid event hosted by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland which will take place both in Augustine United Church and online. Immediately after the lecture there will be a drinks reception.

It may be necessary, due to any future local restrictions imposed because of the pandemic, to move certain events to fully online only. Please keep an eye on the Society website, e-newsletters and your email inbox for the latest news and further information on Society events.

This event is free and open to all.

Lecture will be presented by Professor Margaret Connolly FEA FRHistS FSAScot

Nineteenth-century collectors created albums from all kinds of things including cuttings from medieval manuscripts. Most albums are associated with male collectors, but I will show how women‘s involvement with them may have been obscured. Few albums now remain intact, yet the way in which these assemblages presented medieval manuscripts has cast a long influence over modern perceptions of medieval books and their value.

Lecturer Details

Margaret Connolly is Professor of Palaeography and Codicology at the University of St Andrews and Director of the St Andrews Institute of Medieval Studies. Her research focuses on Middle English literature, and on English and Scottish book culture of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. She is also interested in discovering what happened to medieval manuscripts after the Middle Ages as they passed through the hands of antiquaries and collectors.
