October Lecture: Mary of Guelders and the Architecture of Queenship in Fifteenth-Century Scotland

20th October 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Mary of Guelders from the Seton Armorial, 1591, National Library of Scotland (MS Acc. 9309).

This will be a hybrid event hosted by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland which will take place both in Augustine United Church and online. Immediately after the lecture there will be a drinks reception.

However, it may be necessary, due to any future local restrictions imposed because of the pandemic, to move an event to fully online only.

Please keep an eye on the Society website, e-newsletters and your email inbox for the latest news and further information on Society events.

Lecture will be presented by Dr Rachel Delman BA(Hons) MPhil DPhil FHEA FSAScot

During her widowhood, Mary of Guelders, Queen of Scots, pursued an energetic programme of architectural patronage, including renovations to Falkland Palace in Fife, and the commissioning of Ravenscraig Castle (Fife) and Trinity Collegiate Kirk and hospital outside Edinburgh. Recent dendrochronology at St Giles’ Kirk in Edinburgh also suggests that her patronage was more extensive than previously thought. In this lecture, I will explore how Mary’s building projects articulated messages regarding her gender, piety, power and status during her son’s minority.
