Joint Lecture with Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland
We are delighted to invite you to the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland’s inaugural joint lecture, The Neolithic Axe Quarries at the Eagle’s Nest, Lambay and North Roe, Shetland: A Comparative Perspective, by Emeritus Professor Gabriel Cooney MRIA FSA FSAScot of University College Dublin (UCD) taking place at Society House, 63 Merrion Square, Dublin and online via Zoom, at 7.30pm on Thursday 17 April 2025.

The inaugural joint lecture will focus on Prof. Cooney’s current research, namely the post-excavation work of the excavation of a Neolithic axe quarry site on Lambay off the coast of County Dublin, with comparison to the axe quarry complex at North Roe, Shetland where Professor Cooney led an excavation and survey project.
Gabriel Cooney is Emeritus Professor of Celtic Archaeology, School of Archaeology, University College Dublin. Author of Death in Irish Prehistory (2023, Royal Irish Academy) Gabriel’s research interests focus on the Neolithic period, particularly the use of stone and on mortuary practices in prehistory.
