Job opportunity: Publications Officer

The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland is a charity (Charity No SC 010440) and independent publisher of high-quality peer reviewed books and journals covering the entirety of Scotland’s past with a particular focus on archaeology and history.
The Society is seeking an enthusiastic Publications Officer to support our publishing activity. This position will offer excellent and highly varied experience in all aspects of academic publishing, including editorial, design and marketing responsibilities.

Deadline for applications: 5pm on Sunday 17 September 2017. Interviews will be held on 25 September 2017.

Starting Salary: £18,360 to £20,600 (pro rata) depending on experience, with a 10% pension contribution.

Hours: 4 days a week (29.6 hours a week). This is a permanent post with a probation period of 6 months.

The Society’s most recent book – ‘From Goblets to Gaslights’ by Jill Turnbull – was published in June 2017

Key duties of the role:
• Manage the submission process for journals and books, including peer review
• Create and maintain project records throughout the publication lifecycle
• Work as point of contact for book sales and distribution
• Process and maintain copyright and permission requests
• Coordinate and distribute marketing materials for Society publications, in particular new books
• Provide support selling books at Society and external events
• Provide general administrative support within the publications team

Essential skills:
• Excellent computer skills
• Excellent organisational abilities
• Strong eye for design
• Ability to work well independently
• Excellent communication skills
• Educated to degree level or equivalent relevant professional experience

Desirable skills:
• Experience with Adobe InDesign, WordPress and Microsoft Office
• Demonstrable interest in academic publishing and Scotland’s past

Person specification:
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and interest in the academic publishing industry, as well as an interest in Scotland’s past. They will be able to manage and prioritise a varied workload, with an eye for detail and design. The post requires strong computer skills, as well as excellent communication skills. This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate wishing to begin or broaden a career in academic publishing.
