Domenico Corri (1746-1825) – From the River Tweed to the Operatic Stage

29th January 2024 | Categories: Event

The Georgian Concert Society will be presenting a very special programme curated and performed by Mhairi Lawson (soprano) and Jan Waterfield (harpsichord/piano) on Saturday 10th February at 4.30pm at St Cecilia’s Hall, Edinburgh.

The duo will present songs and arias from the publications of Domenico Corri – an Italian composer, impresario, music publisher, and voice teacher who moved from Rome to Edinburgh in 1771 to take up a position with the Edinburgh Musical Society. Corri and his family then settled in Edinburgh for a further 18 years and went on to become key figures in the artistic life of the city.

In addition to Corri’s own compositions Mhairi and Jan will perform extracts from his operatic editions of Handel, Gluck and Mozart as well as Corri’s arrangements of Scots songs, whilst also providing illuminating insights into his life and diverse work. Jan will play an original harpsichord and pianoforte, both made by John Broadwood and Sons in 1793.
