Missed our Island of Ireland Fellows’ online meet-up on 9th February?

Dr John O’Keeffe, CEO of the Discovery Programme at the Centre for Archaeology & Innovation in Ireland, gave a short presentation at the online Fellows’ meeting on 9th February, on the Discovery Programme, what it is and does, its mission and objectives, including:

– Enhancing the understanding of Ireland’s past through archaeological and related research in the humanities and sciences

– Establishing and directing research programmes and promoting such research

– Promoting the appreciation of Ireland’s archaeological heritage through education and outreach programmes

Dr John O’Keeffe took up the post of CEO with the Discovery Programme in late 2020. A graduate of Queen’s University, Belfast and for the University of Ulster, John was previously Principal Inspector of Historic Monuments in Northern Ireland, where he had a lead role in regulatory activities around archaeological sites and monument including the licencing of excavations, the conduct of conservation works, advice to government departments on development and land-use change, and leading on public outreach about the historic environment.

Prior to his time in public service John worked in commercial archaeology, and was a part-time lecturer in adult education about history and archaeology. John is also a Chartered Construction Manager with the Chartered Institute of Building, a Member of the Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland, and a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeology.
