Recording of September 2023 ‘Meet the Author & Historian’ Available

18th October 2023 | Categories: Event

Missed our Fellows’ online meet-up on 21st September ‘Meet the Author and Historian’?

Find the recording of “Writing about Place: an immersive approach to history, archaeology, and landscape” here, given by Fellow David C. Weinczok FSAScot.

Historic sites are so often discussed in isolation and from a literal or metaphorical distance. What happens when we zoom out and take a documentarian’s approach, including first-hand experience, conversations with locals, folklore, contemporary literature, and more? In this talk, David draws on examples from his current book project where immersion has revealed new insights, answered seemingly unanswerable questions, and put individual sites into the context of their ever-changing environments. Examples are drawn from locations including Orkney’s Eynhallow Sound, Kilmartin Glen, the Eildon Hills, Barra and Vatersay, and more.

David is a writer and historian born in Canada and at home in Edinburgh. David was elected to the Society in 2016. He has been writing and delivering talks about Scottish history from a place-based perspective for a decade, with bylines and talks for Archaeology Scotland, National Museums Scotland, The Scots Magazine, The National, and many others. His 2019 book The History Behind Game of Thrones: The North Remembers used his love of fantasy as a way to share stories from Scotland’s past. Find a shortlist of his works at www.castlehunter.scot.

The online Fellows’ meetings are one hour and include a talk given by a Fellow on an area of their research concerning Scotland’s past – heritage, history and archaeology.

These online meetings provide opportunity for Fellows from across the globe to come together virtually to listen to a talk, and to meet Society staff on Zoom.
