ONLINE FELLOWS’ MEETING: ‘Vile Spot’: Military Policy and Political Reality in the British Army in Scotland after Culloden
The immediate aftermath of the Battle of Culloden has been well explored. By contrast, the enduring British Army presence in Scotland for many years after the battle has been neglected. In this lecture, Murray Pittock will explore the conflict between the army and the politicians and the long term consequences of this for military operations in Scotland.
Murray Pittock is Bradley Professor and Pro Vice-Principal at the University of Glasgow and a member of the European Academy, Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a prizewinner of both the RSE and the British Academy. He is the author of Scotland: The Global History (Spectator and Choice Book of the Year), Culloden (History Today Book of the Year Choice), Material Culture and Sedition (Saltire Research Book of the Year shortlist) and many other titles. This talk forms part of his book on ‘The British Army, Scotland, Culloden and Imperial Policy: Vile Spot’, under contract with Oxford University Press.
