Society’s Scottish Archaeological Internet Reports (SAIR) Expands Focus to Include Historical Research
To further integrate historical and archaeological research, the Society has relaunched SAIR as the Scottish Historical and Archaeological Internet Reports (SHAIR).

In 2000, the Society created SAIR to provide an open access and peer-reviewed publication for Scottish archaeological excavations and large-scale surveys.
To align with the charity’s commitment to interdisciplinary study, the journal is expanding its remit to include historical research, with SAIR henceforth becoming SHAIR.
SHAIR is one of two journals published by the Society, alongside the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (PSAS). PSAS is an annual journal which features shorter articles and operates on a hybrid open access model which grants Fellows of the Society exclusive access to all articles in the two most recent online volumes before they become open access. Whereas SHAIR specialises in longer, more extensive reports and publishes new open access issues continuously throughout the year.
Kate Bailey FSAScot, Editorial Manager at the Society, said:
‘Here at the Society, we believe that “Scotland’s past is for everyone to research, share, enjoy and protect, home and abroad” and the expansion of our free online journal brings us closer to realising that vision. SAIR has long been a vital resource, achieving more than 40,000 downloads each year, and by transitioning to SHAIR, we are broadening our scope to share an even richer, interdisciplinary narrative of Scotland’s past with a worldwide audience.’
We are now inviting submissions from any authors interested in publishing their work on Scottish historical topics in SHAIR. We welcome analytical reports that present the findings of historical research conducted on any aspect of Scotland’s past and are over 10,000 words in length.
