Rachel Pickering MA(Hons) MA FSAScot

Research in Action on Church Heritage Research Officer

Rachel started as Research Officer for the Research in Action on Church Heritage (ReACH) team in July 2026. She graduated with an MA (Hons) in Archaeology in 2009 and since then has worked in various roles with Historic Environment Scotland, from designating scheduled monuments to managing ancient monument casework, and providing archaeological advice on the Properties in Care. Between 2019 and 2021 she obtained an MA in Buildings Archaeology from the University of York, deepening her knowledge of historic buildings and their conservation. Her research focused on the archaeological analysis of upstanding Scottish parish churches and highlighted the historical significance and value of church buildings of all periods. She is passionate about Scotland’s heritage, particularly it’s church heritage and is honoured to be working with the ReACH team on this invaluable project to record Scotland’s churches.

Favourite heritage: “I couldn’t possibly choose a favourite church, but of all of Scotland’s sites, the Ring of Brodgar has a special place in my heart.”
