Royal Heraldry was a statement of territorial claim and marriage. Mary’s use of the Royal Arms of England caused a severe diplomatic row. A various armorials were produced during and after her reign, especially by the Hamilton family as next in line to the throne. Following her execution Mary was given a state funeral by the guilt conscious Queen Elizabeth for which detailed accounts survive.
