New Research Exploring Roman Britain
Dear Fellows,
We are pleased to feature a recent publication by Professor Kenneth Rainsbury Dark FSAScot, Tyrants and Traders: Tintagel, Arthur and the Lost Kings, published by Bloomsbury Academic. This book presents exciting new research illuminating what many historians see as the most mysterious centuries of British history.

Professor Dark uses archaeological evidence, along with re-analysis of the few existing texts, to reveal an unexpectedly sophisticated society connected to a wide international network of trade and cultural contacts. This book demonstrates, through the latest archaeological discoveries, that Tintagel–an eroded coastal stronghold in Cornwall, closely associated with the later legend of King Arthur–was a royal fortress and trading centre of one of the most important British kingdoms of this period.
Professor Dark notes that chapter four will be of particular interest to our Fellowship, covering the Roman engagement with what is today Scotland and northern England. To connect with Professor Dark about his research, please contact fellowship@socantscot.org.
Many thanks,
