We are pleased to promote the research of Gwen Chessell FSAScot, who has recently published her latest book entitled Franklin’s Doctor: A Life of Sir John Richardson RN, Surgeon, Arctic Explorer, Naturalist.

Chessell’s book investigates Sir John Richardson, a Scottish naval surgeon and naturalist whose life and story are often overshadowed by that of his friend and relative by marriage: the tragic Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin. Chessell’s research sheds light on the Scotsman who made accurate surveys of more of the Canadian Arctic coast than any other explorer.
