Scottish Archaeological Research Framework Project Officer

The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland is seeking an exceptional candidate for the post of ScARF Project Officer. The post will help deliver the Society’s role within Aim 2 of Scotland’s Archaeology Strategy. The successful candidate will assist the ScARF Project Manager with the development and updating of the Scottish Archaeological Research Framework. Work will include helping to co-ordinate projects to create and publish new regional research frameworks as well as updating existing frameworks. The role will also build on the success of the recent ScARF Museums project to help encourage and build capacity for research on archaeological collections in museums.

 Position Title: ScARF Project Officer

Reporting to: ScARF Project Manager (Helen Spencer)

Starting salary: £23,409 to £26,946 per annum  pro rata depending on experience, plus a 10% pension contribution, flexible working, childcare voucher scheme available.

Hours: Part time, 15 hours per week. This is a fixed term position until the end of March 2022.

Holidays: 38 days per year pro rata, roughly equating to 15 days

Key duties of the role:

  • Assist with the regional research framework projects, with particular responsibility for ensuring collaboration and integration with museums in the regions
  • Work with all interested parties currently undertaking archaeological research into Scotland’s past to obtain the fullest evidence possible for the framework
  • Assist in updating the ScARF website with the latest research related to the existing ScARF resources, both regional, subject and period based
  • Assist with the creation and maintenance of user documentation for the ScARF website
  • Contribute to the content of the ScARF and Society websites including creating blog posts and adding news items
  • Contribute to the monthly ScARF e-newsletter for the project and other newsletters as required (e.g. the newsletter of the CIfA Scottish Group)
  • Contribute to regular reports for the ScARF Advisory group, Society and funders
  • Organise, host and attend seminars/workshops/conferences and meetings as required to promote and communicate the aims and results of the project and the Society
  • Promote the ScARF project at archaeological and other events
  • Work within the budget and timelines for the project, ensuring production of required outputs are on time and within budget

Essential skills:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent relevant professional experience
  • Knowledge and experience of working in the Scottish archaeology and heritage sector
  • Excellent organisational ability
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills – including MS Office & Photoshop

 Desirable skills:

  • Understanding of Scotland’s Archaeology Strategy
  • Experience of website editing and content creation (WordPress)
  • Experience of working on projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to work well independently and within a small team
  • Experience of a museum environment

Person specification:

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and interest in archaeological research into Scotland’s past, as well as an understanding of the role of research frameworks. They will also have knowledge of the wider heritage sector in Scotland. They will be able to manage and prioritise a varied workload, with an eye for detail. They will also be able to write engaging content for newsletters and websites. The post holder will have excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with a variety of stakeholders.  This is a fantastic opportunity for a candidate wishing to develop or broaden a career in Scottish archaeology.
