ARP 2011 “Headless Horsemen?: recent discoveries at Roman Inveresk” by Dr Melanie Johnson, CFA Archaeology

“Headless Horsemen? Recent discoveries at Roman Inveresk” a short lecture by Dr Melanie Johnson, CFA Archaeology Ltd, at the Archaeological Research in Progress (ARP 2011) national day conference on Saturday 28th May 2011 at the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

This paper will present the results of CFA’s recent excavations outside Inveresk Roman Fort, Musselburgh on the site of the new Musselburgh Primary Care Centre. The discoveries include a Mesolithic lithic scatter, Iron Age pit burials, a Roman rampart base, a series of Roman inhumations, some of which had been decapitated, and a Roman field system.
