Welcome to new Fellows
At the successful Anniversary Meeting and AGM of the Society on St Andrews Day all the proposed Fellows were successfully elected – congratulations to them all! New Fellow packs are being sent out this week and we look forward to seeing you at future events or hearing from you at any time. Please see the About Us and Contact Us sections of the Society website for information on who to contact and how.
Both proposed members of Council were also successfully elected, and we welcome back Dr Stephen Carter as Treasurer and Dr Heather James as a new Council Trustee.
The RBK Stevenson Award was presented by the President for the article published in the Proceedings on a topic that best reflects the scholarship and high standards of this distinguished individual who was for many years the Keeper of the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland and was President of the Society between 1975 and 1978. The award of £50 went to Alice Blackwell and Susanna Kirk for their paper titled “Seventh century or seventeenth century? Identifying glass beads from Scotland”. The paper is available online to Fellows of the Society.
The meeting also saw the President award the prestigious solid silver Dorothy Marshall Medal. This is presented every three years to an individual who, in a voluntary capacity, has made an outstanding contribution to Scottish archaeological or related work and commemorates Miss Dorothy Marshall who in her own long lifetime contributed so much to Scottish archaeology and especially in the area of her beloved Island of Bute and marks the Society’s gratitude for the bequest to the Society following her death in 1992. The 2016 award went to Audrey Henshall OBE HonFSA Scot who paid tribute to her friend Dorothy in her acceptance speech and thanked the Society for its support.
Finally Dr Brendan O’Connor presented a short talk on “80 years on: Pedro Bosch Gimpera’s unpublished Rhind Lectures of 1936”, followed by a wine reception.
The recording of the event will be posted online soon, please keep an eye on the website and your email inboxes if you are a Fellow who couldn’t make the meeting.
