Legacies

During her lifetime Fellow Dorothy Marshall contributed so much to Scottish archaeology, especially in the area of her beloved Island of Bute. The effects of Dorothy’s generosity continues to be felt through a bequest to the Society.

By leaving a gift in your will to the Society you can help provide support for new research, high quality publications and engaging outreach and public events. The gift will cost nothing in your lifetime but will make a lasting contribution to the future study of Scotland’s past.

Monies can either go to the Society Research Fund or to the core costs of delivering the Society’s main programme and publications. If you are considering leaving a gift in your will please consider how you wish your gift to be used.

There are a number of types of legacy available:

Residual legacy – This is a gift of the remainder (or portion of remainder) of your estate, after all payments, taxes and other gifts have been made.

Pecuniary legacy – A fixed sum of money decided by you at the time of making your will.

Specific legacy – Specific possessions such as property, shares or objects left in a will.

Leaving a legacy gift is an important decision and personal matter. It doesn’t have to be complicated.

Should you choose to remember the Society in your will we recommend you contact a solicitor to ensure it is legally valid and reflects your intentions.

If you already have a will and wish to add a gift to the Society this can be done using a codicil. A codicil need not change the terms of your current will, it can simply add a new instruction.

If you have already written the Society into your will, we are very grateful and would like to thank you personally, so please let us know.

If you would like your gift to go towards something specific please contact us to discuss.

Gifts made to charity, both during your lifetime or in a will, are exempt from Inheritance Tax. Your solicitor will be able to advise you on this.

If you would like to find out more about leaving the Society a legacy, please contact either                  Dr Simon Gilmour (Director) or Andrea Kaszewski (Fellowship & Development Manager) at the Society for a confidential conversation.

Our most recent legacy was received from Audrey S. Henshall, OBE MA FSA HonFSAScot, to be used for research or field work on pre-Roman antiquities in Scotland.

All small or large legacy gifts help the Society to further promote the study and enjoyment of Scotland’s past for the benefit of all and bring the past to life for future generations.
