What the Grant Funds

Reflecting Audrey Henshall’s wishes and research interests, the legacy stipulates that the funds ‘…shall be used for research or fieldwork on pre-Roman antiquities in Scotland and not for general excavation work, and that the said Society will publish the results of such research or fieldwork’.

The Society has determined that this includes artefactual and scientific studies, field survey and desk-based work as well as targeted research excavation for pre-Roman sites in Scotland.    

Amount

A grant of up to £10,000 is currently available.

Deadline

The deadline for applications is 11:59pm (UK time) on 30 November 2026.

Decisions

Applicants will be notified of a decision by the end of January 2027. 

Grants are made on the recommendation of the Grants and Awards Committee and the approval of the Society’s Council.  

Previous Grants

The first Audrey Henshall Legacy Award of £50,000 was awarded in November 2024 to Archaeology Scotland for a project entitled Scotland’s Earliest Megalith Monuments.
