Audrey Henshall Legacy Fund

To develop and undertake impactful research on pre-Roman archaeology in Scotland

Thanks to a generous bequest to the Society from Audrey Hensall OBE HonFSAScot, we are delighted to announce a new Grant opportunity from the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland

Reflecting Audrey Hensall’s wishes, and her research interests, the Society is pleased to offer a significant opportunity to fund one or more major project/s (up to a total of £50,000) to develop and undertake impactful research on pre-Roman archaeology in Scotland.

An initial call for ‘Expressions of Interest’ (EOI) is now open with a closing date of the end of February 2024.

EOIs should be made by filling in the Audrey Henshall EOI form. Following the deadline, the EOIs will be considered by the Grants and Awards Committee who will select a number of EOIs to be developed into more detailed applications. A final decision will then be made by the Grants and Awards Committee.

The legacy stipulates that the funds “…shall be used for research or fieldwork on pre-Roman antiquities in Scotland and not for general excavation work, and that the said Society will publish the results of such research or field work.” For the avoidance of doubt, we have determined that this includes survey and desk-based work as well as excavation of pre-Roman antiquities in Scotland.

In addition to keeping within the remit of the legacy it is desirable, but not essential, that consideration during project development should be given to: ensuring efficiency in the use of funds (such as the use of  existing networks/assets and collaborations to increase the value and benefit of the legacy), addressing questions in the Scottish Archaeological Research Framework (ScARF), the positive impact of research on local communities and aligning research with the priorities of the new national heritage strategy, Our Past Our Future.

Determination of the appropriate route for publication by the Society (e.g. PSAS, SAIR, book, blog, ScARF article, other online Society resource) will be made as part of the project development and influenced by the way the funds are used.

Smaller grants of up to £10,000 will be available through the Audrey Henshall Legacy Fund in due course.

For further information or an informal discussion about the suitability of your proposed project, please contact Dr Helen Spencer at

Expressions of interest should be addressed to the Dr Helen Spencer ( and arrive by email on or before 29th February 2024.

A decision on the progression of  Expressions of Interests to next stage will be taken as soon as possible after the deadline. Applicants can therefore expect to hear whether or not they have been successful within 2 months of the application deadline.
