The prestigious annual Rhind lectures will take place from 10 May to 12 May 2019. This year,
Professor David J Breeze HonFSA Scot will be lecturing on:
‘Hadrian’s Wall: A Study in Archaeological Exploration and Interpretation’.

Hadrian’s Wall was built to defend the north-west frontier of the Roman Empire in AD 122, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site that spans 73 miles from east to west. Professor Breeze will, over the course of six lectures, examine the ways that data about the Wall has been created over the years, and examine specific aspects of the Wall in depth.

The Rhind lectures are an annual highlight of the Society calendar, which we like to accompany with a collection of our favourite related books and articles from across the years. This year’s selection relates to Roman influence in Scotland – in particular artefacts and materials, as well as key sites and finds from Roman interactions with the native population of Scotland. You might even spot one or two papers by our lecturer!
